Federal Tax Incentives for Sprinkler Systems

Federal Tax Incentives Available

After a fourteen year effort, The Fire Sprinkler Incentive Act was finally adopted by the US Congress. The National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA) played a large part in supporting this legislation. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act now includes Fire protection. This legislation insures tax incentives for fire suppression systems.

“This accomplishment for fire and life safety has been 14 years in the making. To say we are excited is an understatement,” explained Shane Ray, NFSA president. “Our NFSA team goal was to support Congressional leaders over the years who sponsored and co-sponsored the bi-partisan legislation that was first filed following the tragic Station Nightclub fire in Rhode Island that claimed 100 lives in early 2003.”

This legislation provides significant incentives for property owners to install fire sprinklers. These include:

  • Small businesses will now be able to fully expense installation of fire sprinklers under section 179 of the tax code up to a cap of $1 million per year. This will allow for the retrofit and upgrading of numerous businesses.
  • The interest expense on any money borrowed to pay for the sprinklers maybe fully tax deductible.
  • Larger entities can fully expense capital expenditures over the next five years. Hopefully, this will allow high-risk occupancy buildings to improve their fire safety features.

Consult with your Tax Advisor

Like any Federal tax incentive program, the first step is to consult with your tax advisor.  Make sure everyone is clear on how the incentives work and if they are right for your business.  The next step is to seek out a qualified sprinkler company to help with the installation or retro fit of your fire sprinklers.
